Our local BBC News team came to film the state of Whitby’s piers last week. Their report was shown throughout the North East and Cumbria region over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Fight4Whitby organised a local boat to take the BBC cameraman out of the harbour mouth and around the outside of the West Pier. From water-level it was very obvious just how extensive some of the cracks, slumps and voids are in the ancient stonework of our vital storm defences.
Scarborough Borough Council say they cannot raise the £4 million to match fund the £5 million already offered by DEFRA. John Freeman, local artist and past Mayor of Whitby pointed out that ‘If you can put £9 million into a new water park in Scarborough town, why can’t you put £3 million into one of the most iconic towns in the country?’
Last year the income to SBC from Whitby’s Endeavour Wharf and Marina Car Parks was over £900,000!
Fight4Whitby still needs your donations to cover the costs of our legal advice from specialist harbour lawyers.
