A very successful Hustings took place yesterday, with 6 out of the 8 prospective MPs on the platform to answer questions. About 70 to 80 members of the public attended to hear the candidates take turns to answer all sorts of questions. These were chosen at random from all those submitted beforehand. Some of these can be seen on a Facebook Events page created by Team Dorrie, who organised the whole event so well.
The Hustings was chaired by Jon Stokoe, the Whitby journalist, who took a firm line with both audience and panel. As a result, the discussion was well run and without the usual tiresome interruptions. There was little shouting out and almost no talking-over, which all too often ruins any political ‘debate’ on television.
John Freeman was able to find a ‘localism’ angle to almost every question. From Austerity to Brexit, from Conservation to the Economy and from Potash to Fishing Quotas. One of the longest rounds of applause from the audience was when he said:
‘I am not a politician. I am a 75-year old – who has had it up to here with being fobbed-off by local politicians. Scarborough Borough Council needs to actually listen to us. They need to be far more accountable to their local residents. Enough is enough!‘
